Teddy Roosevelt is rolling in his grave
I've been to a lot of national parks. My family is the kind that will drive cross-country just to get to a national park and then drive through it, ooh-and-aah at the animals, take a few pictures of the waterfalls, and drive back. We've been doing it for many summers, and pine trees and grizzly bears dominate my childhood photo albums. As my high school biology teacher would say, it's good for me to spend time outdoors, appreciating nature.

Perhaps that's why I was so struck when I read the New York Times piece about a letter to the Secretary of the Interior. 47 US Senators (led byMontana Democrat Max Baucus and Idaho Republican Mike Crapo) wrote Secretary Kempthorne to advocate for the lifting of the ban on bringing ready-to-fire weapons into national parks and refuges.

To me, that's antithetical to the idea of a "refuge." Let's set aside thousands of acres that won't be developed and will be pristine and should be a safe haven for the feathered and furred creatures...but feel free to bring your loaded guns!

Hunting is not allowed in national parks and refuges, but that doesn't mean that poaching doesn't occur. Though I guess it wouldn't really take much longer for someone to assemble and load the weapon...

Misplaced priorities?
Follow me as we skim the pages of today's Badger Herald and check out some articles on current issues...

Front page:
- Campus safety/ self defense
- The nonexistent state budget and subsequent (scary) budget costs for the UW

Digest (page 2)
:
- Patriot Act lawsuit

Page 4
:
- Walkout in support of the Jena 6/ racism in existence today

Page 6
:
- An Iraq War veteran returning his medals

Page 7
:
- Protest of the Planned Parenthood clinic
- Public school education test scores are falling... yet still above the national average
- City government at work reviewing the permits for Library Mall food carts

...and then you get to the Opinion section. Let's concentrate on page 11:
- Rehabilitation vs. relocation for sex offenders (by Bassey Etim)
- SSFC and the question of student rights and control over seg fees (by Rachel Butler)
- SCHIP (the State Children's Health Insurance Plan) and Bush's veto threat (by the College Democrats)
- The pressing, all-important issue of concealed carry of firearms (by the College Republicans)

Seriously?! With all these urgent issues - from the expiration of SCHIP this Sunday to UW having to cut majors and faculty because of budget shortfalls, and from the Iraq War to racism in Louisiana - Sara Mikolajczak (chair of the College Republicans and author of the article) and her organization sees it essential to complain about the critical need for more weapons on the streets. "Even in a few short months," she says, "when I get a gun for my 21st birthday (hint to my daddy) I won't be able to carry it for protection. Why? Because Gov. Jim Doyle says so."

Misplaced priorities?

Better than Rep. Frank Lasee's plan...
Orlando, Florida, initiated a "Kicks for Guns" program designed to get guns off the streets. Basically you turn in a gun, you get a pair of sneakers (or $50 gift certificates) - no questions asked. It's an annual program run in Orange County by the Sheriff's Dept and two local radio stations in hopes that they can cut into the city's violent crime problem.

Last year, the program recovered 116 guns (including 3 stolen ones... and a Tec 9 machine gun).

This year, over 310 guns were collected. Some were of great value, some were used only for hunting, some were historical relics, some were rusty, some were used in crimes. And one was a surface-to-air missile launcher.

The police will test-fire every gun (to match bullet rifling to unsolved crimes) and then destroyed.

While other states are getting guns off the streets, some brilliant minds in the Wisconsin legislature are trying to give them to schoolteachers (check out Rep. Lasee's blog) or allow people to carry concealed weapons. If it were up to me, I'd rather have the State pay $50 now instead of $50,000 later to prosecute a violent crime...
