Speaking of Elitists...
ABC News' Very Serious Anchor Charlie Gibson, who believes that capital gains cuts cause revenues to rise in spite of overwhelming consensus that this is not the case, also asserted in a debate at the end of January that a household consisting of two teachers would make about $200,000 per year in salary.

It's just so ironic and laughable for a rich, out-of-touch "journalist" like Gibson to question Obama's common-man cred. Since when have you heard a friend or family member bitch about how high the capital gains tax is these days? It's just not a concern of average Americans. Is Gibson planning to dump a whole lot of stock in the next couple of years or something?

To spend such a large amount of time on capital gains taxes which overwhelmingly affects the richest sliver of the population (people who own stocks through IRAs and tax-sheltered savings accounts don't pay tax when the value goes up, and about 83% of the benefits of the 2003 capital gains cut went to the richest 5% of the population), is a huge disservice to those who don't actually have the time to fact-check the debates themselves. In fact, not only don't revenues go up, but there is evidence that it encourages tax sheltering it doesn't even incentivize the type of investment we want.

Kos is right, next time let's discuss the horrendous price of caviar. But not before we spend at least an hour assessing the candidates' relative love for America.

Blame ABC all you want, but Obama still had a bad debate...

It happens, even Reagan got pwned in his first debate with Mondale in 84'.

Obama even had a $87 billion moment, whether intended or not (He was maybe refering to payroll taxes versus income taxes, but an attack ad won't bother to distinguish the two):

Two-part question: Can you make an absolute, read-my-lips pledge that
there will be no tax increases of any kind for anyone earning under $200,000 a year?...

MR. GIBSON: Senator Obama?
MR. STEPHANOPOULOS: Would you take the same pledge?...

MR. GIBSON: Senator Obama, you both have now just taken this
pledge on people under $250,000 and 200-and-what, 250,000.

SENATOR OBAMA: Well, it depends on how you calculate it. But it
would be between 200 and 250,000...

...SENATOR OBAMA: Well, Charlie, I just have to respond real quickly to
Senator Clinton's last comment. What I have proposed is that we raise
the cap on the payroll tax, because right now millionaires and billionaires don't have to pay beyond $97,000 a year...

...MR. GIBSON: But Senator, that's a tax. That's a tax on people
under $250,000.

NOTE: this one was not a "petty" issue either, it was straight up policy.

Will McCain get vetted the same at some point (on both "petty" issues and policy)? If I had to guess based on past elections: absolutely yes. Has Clinton been vetted as much already? I would say, counting last night, yes.

ABC Outrage
Ditto. I knew our media was bad, but I never thought we'd see the day when the first hour of a PRESIDENTIAL debate would sound like an audio version of National Enquirer.

What the hell? It's like they want to suck every last drop of ratings juice out of the primary season and in the process they suck all the substance out of their questions. This was gotcha politics at its worst.

Clinton sank pretty low too. As Matt Yglesias put it, her talking points read like a Weekly Standard blog post.

UPDATE: Also ditto.
The networks' trick is covering an election with as little emphasis on issues as possible, then blaming everyone else for failing to focus on "the issues."

Pretty Profound
Glenn Greenwald:
Our elections are almost completely devoid of any examination of consequential issues or fundamental political problems. They are driven by what journalists Mark Halperin and John Harris have aptly described as the Drudgian Freak Show -- a series of petty, personality-based attacks and demonization campaigns designed to build up the GOP leaders into honor-bound, masculine and strong men of courage and moral fiber, regular guys of sterling character. Democrats and liberals, by contrast, are gender-warped, weak, culturally bizarre, elitist freaks.

The Barack Obama "controversies" of the last two weeks -- from his bowling score to his sudden hatred for Small Town America -- are just the fulfillment of the standard script. When Hillary Clinton was leading the polls throughout 2007, the same types of storylines were predominant about her.
