SiCKO Recap
Tonight about 75 people turned out to watch Michael Moore's new film "SiCKO" in Vilas Hall. The room was packed, people lay on the floor (reminiscent of 3rd grade indoor recess), and the popcorn was chowed down in minutes.

The movie was excellent, Mr. Moore's best in my opinion. But now it's your turn. What are your thoughts on the film? Post them on the comments section and let's get the conversation going.

Thanks to everyone who came out tonight and made tonight such a huge success. Remember to check out the State Government Forum on Monday night at 7PM in 2120 Grainger Hall. In the meantime enjoy the game on Saturday and Go Packers on Sunday!

Forward.

Under the Radar
Democrats did pretty well in little noticed off-year election victories on Tuesday, most notably defeating a corrupt incumbent Republican governor of Kentucky and gaining control of the Virginia State Senate.

Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos wrote up a good rundown of the rest of the good news.

Deep Question of the Day
Is it ironic that a man whose presidential candidacy is possible solely because of his supposed heroism and resolve in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks has been endorsed by a man who blamed America for those very attacks?

UPDATE 11/10: Here's the most interesting part of the endorsement. Pat Robertson says on his website that 9/11 happened because God withdrew his protection from America. Why did God withdraw his protection? Because of our gay/abortion-loving secular culture. SO why is he endorsing Rudy Giuliani who has, shall we say, a relatively permissive attitude toward social issues for a Republican? He'll protect America from evil Islamic-terrorist hordes. As Josh Marshall points out, the logical conclusion of this is that Robertson must believe Giuliani can do a better job of protecting America than God himself. Crazy stuff...

The latest on Bush and Cheney
As the Washington Post reported yesterday, the House overrode President Bush's veto of a water projects bill, and the Senate is projected to override it with a sizeable margin. It's rather surprising when you read about what was authorized in the bill that he decided wasn't worth the monetary cost:
- $3.5 billion for hurricane-stricken Louisiana
- $2 billion in Everglades restoration, that rapidly disintegrating environmental gem in Florida
- billions for flood control, something that could, you know, save lives and perhaps even an entire city (cough, New Orleans)

Sen. Russ Feingold opposes the bill on the moral high ground that it doesn't do enough to improve the Army Corps of Engineers. Yes, it would be nice to wait around for a perfect bill. Unfortunately, this President seems to veto a lot of those that actually would make a difference. And yes, this bill merely gives the authorization and no actual dollars towards these projects, authorizing flood control repairs could be kinda helpful.

In Cheney's world today, the Vice President escaped an impeachment attempt. Wait, what impeachment attempt? Exactly. USA Today reports online.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (aka Presidential Candidate Kucinich) has been trying to get impeachment articles passed (sound a little familiar?) against Mr. Cheney for his "high crimes and misdemeanors" before the invasion of Iraq. Now, I'm of the mind that believes that these meaningless measures distract from important issues. Apparently House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer agrees with me. He's stifled it in the committee, saying, "Impeachment is not on our agenda. We have some major priorities. We need to focus on those."

Bush makes Nixon look good
New Gallup poll shows that more Americans strongly disapprove of President Bush (50% with 64% total disapproving) than disapproved of Nixon right before he was impeached (48%). I just wish he could run for another term!

On the downside, the poll also shows fairly strong support for military action against Iran (46%). Guess we haven't learned all our lessons yet...
