The State of American Healthcare: Boy Dies of Toothache
From Jef Hall:
Twelve-year-old Deamonte Driver died of a toothache Sunday.

A routine, $80 tooth extraction might have saved him.

If his mother had been insured.

If his family had not lost its Medicaid.

If Medicaid dentists weren't so hard to find.

If his mother hadn't been focused on getting a dentist for his brother, who had six rotted teeth.

By the time Deamonte's own aching tooth got any attention, the bacteria from the abscess had spread to his brain, doctors said. After two operations and more than six weeks of hospital care, the Prince George's County boy died.
Read the rest here, and tell me again about American Healthcare being the best in the world.

Survey Finds Support for Ban
The Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter is running an AP story that discusses a survey that has found that "nearly two-thirds of Wisconsin residents support a statewide ban on smoking in all bars, restaurants and work places" and that "support cuts across party lines, with 73 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of Republicans favoring such a ban." Unrelated to the survey but related to the topic at hand, the article points out that "Doyle said earlier this month that he does not want to exempt bars, but he is willing to compromise."

I, for one, welcome the statewide ban. I didn't realize how much I appreciated Madison's smoking ban until I was home for a while a couple weeks ago. The smoke in my local (Milwaukee 'burb) watering hole was just awful.

Medicare vs. Britney
There's a great column in Rolling Stone about our country's fixation on things that don't matter and neglect of things that do. Throw in the item by item rundown of places where we've got our priorities misplaced and it's a biting and salient read.

Ties That Bind
The Guardian is running an article that can certainly be called rather bizarre and slightly ironic: an ancestor of Strom Thurmond owned an ancestor of Al Sharpton.

The Rest of CDW
After the Friday night festivities, the convention was cut a bit short by the weather. Heavy snow and strong winds forced many of the scheduled speakers to cancel their trips to Eau Claire. State Supreme Court candidate Linda Clifford made it to address the delegation before elections took place for the State Executive Board.

Congratulations to CDM Vice-Chiar Kira Brenner on her election to the position of State Chair. Also representing Madison on the State E-Board will be Analiese Eicher, who will serve as Women's Issues Chair.

Next Up: DLI
