Window Posters
Walking around campus, I think I see more Mark Green and Dave Magnum posters in peoples' windows than Jim Doyle and Tammy Baldwin. What's up with that? Not only are there a ton more Dems on this campus, we're giving away the posters for free. Head on over here to get your own, pick your favorites, and make it blatantly obvious that this city is a progressive stronghold!

Sick, Sick, Sick...
News junkies like myself have probably already heard about the resignation of Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) in the wake of a scandal involving sexually explicit emails and instant messages he sent to a 16 year old male congressional page. There are also shocking accusations that members of the House leadership including Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Leader John Boehner knew about the revelations almost a year ago. To me, this is reminiscent of the Catholic Church scandals where abusive priests were moved from parish to parish putting more children at risk.

The exchanges he had were revolting; many were not even released by ABC, the news outlet that broke the story, due to their graphic contact. The released messages included:
Maf54: You in your boxers, too?
Teen: Nope, just got home. I had a college interview that went late.
Maf54: Well, strip down and get relaxed.

Another message:

Maf54: What ya wearing?
Teen: tshirt and shorts
Maf54: Love to slip them off of you.

And this one:

Maf54: Do I make you a little horny?
Teen: A little.
Maf54: Cool.

Maf are the initials of Congressman Foley followed by 54, his birth year. It is unclear whether House leadership knew about these graphic exchanges or just some tamer, but still disturbing, emails that were made public Thursday.

Foley, who ironically co-chaired the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, was considered a shoo-in for reelection in his Republican-leaning Florida district until he resigned yesterday. The hypocrisy of it all is striking since he crusaded for tough laws against those who used the Internet for sexual exploitation of children, noting: "They're sick people; they need mental health counseling."

Under Florida law, Florida Republicans can not replace him on the ballot after the primary has occured. Therefore, his seat seems likely to be won by his formerly long shot Democratic challenger Tim Mahoney. If we factor in Tom DeLay who also resigned from Congress but must remain on the ballot, Democrats are really only 13 seats away from a majority in the House. This sex scandal does not bode well for a party that relies on energized religious conservatives to get out the vote in November.

Bush Will Not Budge On Global Warming
President Bush "damped speculation that his administration was exploring a major shift in global-warming policy and may soon embrace some kind of formal government-imposed limits."

Yesterday Laurie David, one of the producers of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, spoke about consensus in the scientific community about global warming. There is more agreement now, she said, that fossil fuels are causing global warming, than there was several decades ago that smoking caused lung cancer.

Food for Thought
Consider this: How's the gulf coast, in the wake of Katrina, doing these days? Have the communities there recovered? How does this bode for the capability of the United States government, and those who run it? I'll leave you to chew on that.

The George Allen Insult Generator
Virginia's Republican Senator George Allen has spent the campaign season offending pretty much everyone with one slur or another. Slate's gone and made a George Allen Insult Generator so you can figure out who he'll offend before even he does! Just tell it whether your a Democrat, a stamp collector, a Canadian, a person with bad breath, Irish... It'll give you a good laugh, until you remember George Allen is a sitting Senator.

New Hope for Democrats in Bid for Senate
The New York Times has some encouraging news! The continuing trend of Americans to seek change in the voting booth this November has put Democrats in striking distance to take back both the Senate and the House. A few choice bits from the article:
Still, a shift in the Senate was always considered a long shot this year. Some analysts now say, however, that there are enough Republican seats facing serious challenges to make it at least plausible.

...

In Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, has been lagging behind Bob Casey, the state treasurer, for months. In Rhode Island, Senator Lincoln Chafee, a Republican, overcame his primary challenge, but remains locked in a tight race with Sheldon Whitehouse, the Democrat and former state attorney general.

...

Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said: “We will pick up seats. And if the stars continue to align, we can take back the Senate.”

...

The Virginia race — between Mr. Allen and Jim Webb, the Democrat — looked safe for the Republicans until Mr. Allen made a demeaning reference to a young American man of Indian descent — a Webb campaign worker — at a rally in August. Then, last week, Mr. Allen reacted angrily to a reporter’s question about whether his mother had been born Jewish, which began another distracting episode for his campaign.

This week, he has faced accusations that he used racist slurs in the 1970’s and 1980’s — allegations that Mr. Allen has flatly denied.

...

Analysts say the level of Senate competition should come as no surprise; Senate races are more likely to reflect national trends, they say, whereas most House districts are so carefully drawn on partisan lines that “they are safe against anything but a hurricane,” said Gary C. Jacobson, a political scientist at the University of California, San Diego.

We're in striking distance and nearing the home stretch. Perhaps you'd like contribute to some Democratic momentum? Let us know what you'd be interested in doing to keep our Dems elected, and maybe put a few more in office, using our volunteer form. Or do your part by finding an event or two you'd like to participate in.

1.3 Million Illegal Dollars
Nonpartisan watchdog group The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign today filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission asking that Mark Green be required to dump $1.3 million he transferred into his state campaign fund from his federal fund in violation of federal campaign finance law.

The WDC cites the Wisconsin Department of Justice's finding that Green's transfer violates the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act, aka the McCain-Feingold bill. The DOJ found the legal limit under federal law was $43,128, as the Wisconsin limit for a single donation to a Governor's campaign is $43,128, and the federal law says transfers from federal funds to state funds must respect state donation caps.

Maybe since Mark Green voted against the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act bill while in Congress, he thinks he doesn't have to listen to it.

More interesting poll results...
Just a quick blogging before class. I came across some really interesting poll results in the governor's race. Governor Doyle leads Republican Mark Green 45%-40% with a margin of error of 4% so it's a very tight race.

What was more interesting was the geographic distribution of that support. Doyle leads Green 50% to 39% in the city of Green Bay, Green's hometown! Now Green was not an unpopular congressman, he was reelected with 70% of the vote against an unknown in 2004. Recent poll results showing Steve Kagen in the lead against Assembly Speaker John Gard in the 8th Congressional District confirm Doyle's lead in Northeast Wisconsin. What's more, Green leads Doyle in heavily Democratic Milwaukee 44%-41%.

Now I'm from Green Bay and this summer I saw campaign commercials from Doyle but none from Green. Therefore, I'd assume he was just taking the area for granted (since he's well-known there) by not spending any money on ads there. I wonder if the reverse is true for Milwaukee? In the world of politics there is still an eternity left before this election. Anything can happen, but in all likelihood, the different regions of Wisconsin will realign in their support of the gubernatorial candidates according to their partisan leanings. Yet this seems to confirm that the Doyle campaign should not take any area of the state for granted and compete everywhere.

Why I Like Dave Obey
We're a little late on this one - sorry. From Brewtown Politico:

Rep. Dave Obey of Wisconsin's 7th district fired back at Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) this week. Boehner fired off the tired right-wing talking point of questioning the patriotism of Democrats who continue to question the war in Iraq, and the Bush Administration's prosecution of it.

"I come from the state of Joe McCarthy," said Obey, D-Wausau. "(I) know a third-rate McCarthy when I see one. And we saw one yesterday."

McCarthy, a Republican from Appleton who represented Wisconsin in the Senate from 1947 until his death in 1957, made headlines by accusing the Defense Department of employing unnamed Communists.

House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Tuesday that he wondered if his friends who are Democrats "are more interested in protecting the terrorists than protecting the American people."

Boehner's comment came in response to Democrats who accused President Bush of using his Monday night speech commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to build support for the war in Iraq.

I enjoyed that little chestnut. How 'bout you?

Trust in Small Business
Take a quick peek at the ads "Trust in Small Business PAC" is running on behalf of four Republican House and Senate candidates. It's good for a chuckle - maybe their point is the Republicans in Congress, and trying to get into Congress, are all the same?

Santorum Stays Behind
The northeast's biggest rightwinger, Rick Santorum, looks as if he's headed for almost certain defeat as he trails his challenger, Bob Casey Jr., 48% to 40% in the most recent poll.

Santorum, long heralded as the son of the conservative revolution, has made a point of being far to the right of his moderate constituents in Pennsylvania. Casey, a pro-life Democrat, seems to be beating Santorum on the economy, the war in Iraq, and the environment.
