Wisconsin Smoking Ban...
Today the Wisconsin smoking ban went one small step closer to finally being passed. I have always been a passionate supporter of these bans and I am certainly happy to see some action in Wisconsin. I also realize this is not really a partisan issue so I am wondering how some of my fellow Democrats feel about the ban and just maybe we can all take a break from the primary madness to have a nice little discussion.

I'm all for it. It's an immense public health concern, particularly considering what we know about the effects of second-hand smoking.

You don't see tuberculosis patients allowed to cough freely and put the rest of us in harm's way. No, they're under isolation in negative pressure hospital rooms. Why? Not because they're harming themselves but rather because they are a risk to everyone else.

There is a mountain of historical and parallel scientific evidence that supports a ban on smoking in public places. But can you imagine if there were a TB lobby like there is a Big Tobacco lobby?

The last I checked, Suchita, TB was a communicable disease that can be listed as the cause of death on a death certificate.

I would ask you to show me one death certificate in which "secondhand smoke" was listed as the cause of death. You won't find one. Why? Because there's no way (despite all of the junk science you may have been spoonfed) that secondhand smoke is directly responsible for anyone's death.

Maybe we should outlaw cars, since they cause death, too. Or plastic bags. You never know when one of those suckers is going to jump up and suffocate you.

Tobacco is a legal substance. People have the right to use a legal substance, even if it may harm them. Similarly, people have the choice as to whether or not they will enter a smoking establishment, knowing the "risks" involved.

I, unlike the government and nanny state do-gooders, believe that adults can make their own decisions about what is and what is not harmful to their own bodies.

Why not outlaw tobacco altogether, if it's such a "death threat"? They did it with pot and other illegal drugs, why not tobacco?

Because the dirty little secret is that this isn't about health at all. This is about government control over a person's private property. If they can tell a private business owner that they cannot allow the use of a legal substance on their own private property, they can tell you that you cannot do otherwise legal things in your own home. Where will it end? Do you really want to find out?

This proposed legislation seeks to make criminals of otherwise law-abiding citizens. You'd think our illustrious elected officials would find something better to do with our tax dollars, like catching true criminals.

BAN THE BAN!

I have to say that your arguments are tired and inane. Not to be too insulting here, but you don't necessarily inspire any legitimacy to your cause when you invoke that canard of "big tobacco" or "public health."

Your opinions and personal feelings are just that, and as such they should remain outside the realm of government legislation.

If you feel the compulsion to avoid smoke, then do so on your own terms. To advocate for a smoking ban simply because you feel strongly about it is asinine to say the least.
