As the Washington Post reported yesterday, the House overrode President Bush's veto of a water projects bill, and the Senate is projected to override it with a sizeable margin. It's rather surprising when you read about what was authorized in the bill that he decided wasn't worth the monetary cost:
- $3.5 billion for hurricane-stricken Louisiana
- $2 billion in Everglades restoration, that rapidly disintegrating environmental gem in Florida
- billions for flood control, something that could, you know, save lives and perhaps even an entire city (cough, New Orleans)
Sen. Russ Feingold opposes the bill on the moral high ground that it doesn't do enough to improve the Army Corps of Engineers. Yes, it would be nice to wait around for a perfect bill. Unfortunately, this President seems to veto a lot of those that actually would make a difference. And yes, this bill merely gives the authorization and no actual dollars towards these projects, authorizing flood control repairs could be kinda helpful.
In Cheney's world today, the Vice President escaped an impeachment attempt. Wait, what impeachment attempt? Exactly. USA Today reports online.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (aka Presidential Candidate Kucinich) has been trying to get impeachment articles passed (sound a little familiar?) against Mr. Cheney for his "high crimes and misdemeanors" before the invasion of Iraq. Now, I'm of the mind that believes that these meaningless measures distract from important issues. Apparently House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer agrees with me. He's stifled it in the committee, saying, "Impeachment is not on our agenda. We have some major priorities. We need to focus on those."
