Live Blogging David Horowitz
We're in the Theatre at the Memorial Union right now, it's five past seven and there's already a really good-sized crowd. The protest went really well. There was a fantastic turnout from College Dems, the ISO, CAN, the BSU, and the MCSC. As we were chanting outside the entrence to the Union Theatre by the lake we could see that the protestors certainly outnumbered the folks in support of Mr. Horowitz.

Perhaps a little background is in order. David Horowitz is a "radical" conservative writer who is sponsoring a nationwide campaign called "Islamo-facism Week." He has speakers all over the country giving talks about the dangers of racidal Islam and Muslim abuses of women and homosexuals. What makes this all a little ironic is that one of the speakers he has helping him with I-FW is conservative author Ann Coulter, who has insinuated publicly that both Sen. John Edwards and Vice President Al Gore are "fags." On the women's rights front, she has stated that women are too irrational to have the right to vote...

OK, 7:23. Getting down to gametime here. The bottom level of the theatre is starting to fill up now, but the crowd doesn't seem as rowdy as it could be. My one big hope for tonight is that the audience remains respectful of his freedom of speech.

There are things that are more dangerous in this country than David Horowitz, like not having freedom of speech.

Yeah, I'm a gay student, and I got that e-mail from the College Republicans announcing the coming of Horowitz and how he's denouncing "people who murder homosexuals", etc.

I like how they suddenly act like they're on my side. They viciously slammed gay people in the press in the months before the amendment. I heard everything from gays are going to hell, to we molest children and have sex with animals, to we caused hurricane katrina (I'm not kidding). They made my committed partnership of four years and counting out to be a bigger threat to the United States than terrorism.

The night the amendment passed, I was e-mailed by a Republican on campus, who was partying to celebrate his "victory" (though how it benifited his life I'm not sure). And he told me he always knew my "gay crap agenda" would fail.

So basically, "Islamo-Fascists" kill homosexuals - and conservative Christians only hate us, lie about us, demonize us, and fight tooth and nail to strip us of our civil rights - hospital visititation, health care, sick and bereavement leave, child custody, and so on and so forth. Oh and sometimes they gay bash us, and sometimes they kill us, but at least it's only an individual at a time and not state sanctioned, right?

Give me a break!!! Such hypocrisy makes me sick.

I'm sorry if you feel that us Republicans don't care about gay people; let me tell you that you're mistaken. By sending that email, I was not trying to "suddenly act like [I was] on [your] side." I was simply stating a fact. I'm sorry that you've been marginalized because of your sexuality; that's not right. But please understand that we don't all feel that way. Most of us are willing and able to engage in intelligent conversational discourse on the subject.

The point of the matter is, Islamo-Fascists (no need for the quotation marks) DO, in fact, murder homosexuals. Take a look at President Ahmadinejad's comments from when he visited Columbia (provided here for your convenience: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPLpXcRYjSg). The reason they "don't have homosexuals in Iran" is because they kill them all. Why else would they not exist if homosexuality is inherent and not, as many say, a personal choice? How else could Ahmadinejad control that?

Perhaps, yes, you are criticized by several Christian groups but that is for religious reasons -- separate from political reasons. You can't throw all conservatives into the homosexual-hating mix. I know a lot of people in the GOP that voted AGAINST the amendment last fall. I have gay friends with whom I discussed my vote. I know Democrats who voted FOR the amendment. The issue is really not as partisan as you make it out to be.

My email was not hypocritical and I would greatly appreciate it if you would take a look at what you're saying before you go lumping us all in one hateful category. I know that you know how hurtful that can be. I afford you that luxury; returning the favor is the least you can do.

Thanks,

Huh? Please explain your logic! Why when the amendment was up for a vote in House not one Republican rose to tell the public why is was necessary and almost every democrat present voiced their concerns?

scott,
in all fairness, greg underheim did voice his opposition to the amendment. he retired in november, but he did voice his opposition.

i guess that counts for something... or maybe not.

To reply, Rep. Underheim was the only one to vote against the amendment - and to the best of my knowledge, had no comments on the issue. No republican state senator voted against the amendment.

In addition, Underheim's views were not exactly in line with the Republican party... I think it was in 05 when he put forth a legalizing medical marijuana bill. In his tenure he voted with the Dems as many times as against... anyways, he left the assembly in 2006. I wonder who will take his place as the one anomaly in the party.
