Today in the Badger Herald the editorial board expressed their concern about the Madison City Council attempting to pass a resolution to impeach President Bush. http://badgerherald.com/oped/2007/09/06/horse_feces.php I have to say that I agree. I have a problem with elected officials staying up to 3 am (which I'm sure is way past their bedtime) in order to debate and vote on a resolution that no matter what the outcome, will have as much impact as my Econ lecture taking a vote in the middle of class about whether we should have a final for the class or not.
I would like to offer my support to the 8 members who abstained from voting, (hopefully as a statement about how ridiculous taking that vote was) even if one alderman called it "passing on your responsibility." http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local//index.php?ntid=218808
I realize that the Iraq warn warrants very strong opinions, and believe me I have one as well. The problem comes in the venue in which you choose to express those opinions. The Madison City Council can not impeach the president. Please don't waste time trying.
While it could be argued that those in favor of taking a vote were just trying to make us aware of an issue, I would venture to say that many outlets are already "shedding light" on the situation in Iraq and President Bush's approval rating. While it is the job of elected officials to listen to "the voice of the people" right now that voice needs to talk to someone a little higher up.
