The decision made by the Supreme Court three weeks ago to uphold the 2003 law banning partial birth abortion proved that the new justices, Alito and Roberts, provide the solid conservative majority to uphold the ban.
Despite the fact that the Supreme Court Justices have, in the past, taken into consideration the health of the woman in abortion cases, they still chose to uphold a law that lacks a clause about protecting women's health.
This ban, and the upholding of it, is harmful to women's health, it interferes with medical decision making and does not allow doctor's to provide the best medical care and options for their patients. It also interferes with the personal decisions that should be left up to the woman .
The 5-4 vote shows the willingness of this court to possibly revisit the 1973 case Roe v. Wade and a woman's basic right to an abortion. The door is now open for attacks on safe and legal abortion procedures without any regard to women's health.
As constituents we need to elect more pro-choice Congresspersons and Presidents who will respect and protect the fundamental rights of freedom and privacy for our mothers, wives, sisters and friends.

As a woman living in Wisconsin, I am particularly troubled by the idea of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. If that were to happen, the law on the books in Wisconsin right now would make abortions illegal and turn doctors who perform any abortions into criminals. A woman's right to choose is important. We should alert not only our national representatives of our concern over more stringent abortion bans, but also our state elected officials. We need to encourage our state representatives to take action to change current Wisconsin abortion legislation, which was drafted in the 1800s, to reflect the needs of today's women.
What seems to be forgotten is that only the ban on the procedure called "partial birth abortion" was upheld. This specific procedure never has any extra benifits to a woman's health. Should her health be a concern, other procedures are available. While I agree this could open a dangerous door in regards to futher legislation, I do support the ban on this specific procedure.
As I understand it, the importance of the ruling is not what it actually does but the precedent it sets - it will be significantly easier to overturn the standing precedent.
Abortion should never be used as a form of birth control. It should never be "the fall back." Read this article from the New York times about attitudes towards abortion in China. If there was ever a convincing arguement for extensive and comprehensive sex education for all, this is it.

Abortion is not supposed to be "the fall back," but it is still supposed to be rare, safe, and legal. Unfortunately, the recent Court decision - with no safeguards for the mother's health - is threatening to usher in an era of back-alley procedures, which will be anything but rare or safe.
I don't think anybody is arguing that abortion should be a "fall back" or "a form of birth control."
Honestly, I was just hoping to get more people to read that article, and demonstrate the relationship that exists between abortion and sex education. I'm not trying to advocate my posisition on abortion. I'm trying to advocate my posistion on sex education.
In that case, it seems the Chinese should invest more in sex education.
